Roma’s priority for the midfield remains Georginio Wijnaldum. However, the capital club continue to eye former Fiorentina midfielder Lucas Torreira who is looking to leave Arsenal permanently in this transfer window.
Torreira spent last season on loan at Fiorentina but the Italian club did not take up the option on him due to disagreements over the player’s wages.
With only a year left on his contract, Arsenal are reportedly prepared to sell him for a fee of around €10m this summer and he is not seen with the squad on their pre-season tour of the US.
Roma have had their eyes on him all summer and they contacted the player on Thursday to assess the situation.
With 35 matches played for Fiorentina across all competitions last season, and prior Serie A experience with Sampdoria, bringing in the 26-year-old could be an excellent investment for Roma.
Roma, having expressed interest in the Uruguayan and according to reports, a deal “is close” for the midfielder.
With a rumored buyout clause of €10 million, a straight purchase may be too cost-prohibitive for Roma, but a loan deal could make sense for all parties involved here.
First, however, the capital club must secure a sale with Jordan Veretout, Amadou Diawara and Gonzalo Villar deemed the favorites to leave Roma in the coming weeks.
